Filmmaker brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly have cast Sean Hayes to play Larry in their upcoming Three Stooges movie, a passion project that has been in development since 1996.
The Farrellys (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber) have gone through countless rewrites and four different studios (from Columbia to Warner to MGM and now to Fox) and have still yet to cast the third role of Moe.
For non-Stooges fans, that’s the guy with the receding hairline and wild curls.
He joins ‘MADtv’s Will Sasso as Curly (who, by the way, did not have curls). Moe (the mop-topped one) has not yet been cast.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly will direct and write the comedic biopic, which is scheduled for a 2012 release.
Hayes previously portrayed another famous comedian, Jerry Lewis, in the 2002 TV movie ‘Martin and Lewis.’ Since ‘Will & Grace’ wrapped in 2006, Hayes has guested on ’30 Rock,’ appeared in ‘Soul Men’ and ‘Igor’ and voiced “Mr. Tinkles” in ‘Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.’
Variety reports that the Farrellys will tone down their raunchy humor to earn a PG rating. And we already have a running time: The film will be divided into three 27-minute segments.
Last month, the studio announced that MadTV‘s Will Sasso would play Curly in the film.
Since their debut in 1930′s Soup to Nuts, the Three Stooges have appeared in more than 200 movies — most of which are 20-minute shorts of cartoonish slapstick and physical antics.
The studio hopes to begin filming within a few weeks.
So Sean Hayes thinks he’s a wise guy, eh?
