About Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) is a condition affecting the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, leading to pain, restricted movement, and clicking or popping sounds during jaw motion. It is a common disorder that can significantly impact daily activities like speaking, chewing, and yawning.

TMD is often linked to headaches and neck pain. Dysfunction in one area can contribute to tension and discomfort in others, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive treatment approach.

Can Physical Therapy help with TMD?

Physical therapy plays a critical role in TMD management by relieving pain and addressing muscular imbalances, joint mechanics, and movement patterns that correct the root of the problem and reduce risk for future problems. The current evidence body supports the effectiveness of conservative, non-invasive treatments as first-line interventions for TMD.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Though many clinics offer TMD treatment, very few Physical Therapists have comprehensive training in this area.  Dr. Cherney has nearly 15 years of experience treating TMD and works closely with specialists throughout the Phoenix valley to provide comprehensive care.

How We Treat TMD

Our approach combines evidence-based techniques tailored to your individual needs and may include:

  • Dry needling to relax tight muscles

  • Spinal manipulation and manual therapy to improve joint mobility and reduce tension

  • Diet modifications to minimize aggravating foods (e.g., hard or chewy foods)

  • Hands-on orofacial massage to release tender and restricted tissues (this may include intra-oral techniques to reach muscles deep in your cheeks)

  • Gentle exercises and stretches to enhance jaw mobility and strength

  • Jaw coordination and stabilization activities for optimal function

  • Education on posture, habits, and ergonomics to prevent aggravation

  • Biofeedback techniques to help control muscle tension

  • Aerobic exercise prescription

  • Upper body strength training

Our goal is to provide safe, effective care that reduces symptoms and improves your quality of life, empowering you to move comfortably and confidently.
